Hillyard as a Legg Man
Hillyard used the alias Centipede rec.sport.football.college and in atl.general. Most of the posts made under that name came from machines inside the CDC, although a couple came through zippo.com.
- July 5, 1996 - used in a post to rec.sport.football.college using one of his acknowledged email addresses, rickh@gim.net. He signed the message as Centipede, but in the headers he used the name "Gary Bauer -- Viper Militia." Gary Bauer was one of several men arrested in Arizona in 1996 who identified themselves as the "Viper Militia" and, according to ATF agents, had plotted for two years to blow up various government buildings. I can't imagine why Hillyard would want to associate himself with them, but maybe he wanted to appear more dangerous.
In this particular thread from r.s.f.c, an anonymous poster was the topic of discussion. Some people thought it was someone named "Marron" but others disagreed. I believe Hillyard was that anonymous poster, and that he intended this post to be from his anonymous identity--hence the "Anon-Post-To:" line. Also, the mispelling "rediculous" is one Hillyard makes repeatedly in posts made in any of his identities.
- July 5, 1996 - for some reason Hillyard turned around and posted the same message again, using the address centipede@hotmail.com.
- July 17, 1996 - Used to post to rec.sport.football.college from the CDC, signing his name as "Jim Legg."
- July 17, 1996 - Hillyard also showed up in atl.general as Centipede, claiming to be one of his own coworkers. He was posting from a machine at the CDC. All of his posts came from inside the CDC, as evidenced by "library.airnews.net" in each message-id, "news.iadfw.net" in the paths, and "NNTP-Posting-Host: 158.111.138.178." (Trace routes to 158.111.138.178 time out when they hit the CDC's firewall, because it is a machine behind the firewall.) He evidenced the same mad-on at MindSpring as Ducky, and used the same mispelling of my name, "Cyndi."
- Hillyard later made a post using his own name and claiming "I am not the duck guy or centipede. I might know who they are but I'm not sure. I mentioned to a group of people at work what my son did and later people I did not talk to came and asked me about it. I will find out tomorrow and put a stop to it, if I can." It was an obvious lie, considering that he'd posted to r.s.f.c using that name with own of his other email addresses.
